There are an estimated 200,000 trafficking victims in the United States at the present time, and the numbers are growing at an alarming rate. Understanding the cultural context of survivors' life experiences and world views is essential to identifying and assisting them to access services, recover from trauma, and build a new life.

This interactive workshop will:

  • Enhance awareness of the role of cultural competence in identifying and serving survivors;
  • Increase knowledge of cultural barriers that survivors and providers face; and
  • Provide practical strategies to work effectively across cultural differences.

Facilitators:

Joy M. Zarebka is the former Executive Director of Break the Chain Campaign, an advocacy and direct service organization working to help end modern-day slavery and human trakkficking in the Washington, DC area. She currently serves as an expert witness on human trafficking and domestic worker exploitation in civil and criminal cases. She is the author of The Pigment of Your Imagination: Mixed Race in a Global Society.

Tanya M. Odom is a consultant, coach and Assistant Professor in Georgetown University's Human Resource and Diversity program. She is also the Director of Innovation and Social Media at the FutureWork Institute. She co-facilitated NMCI's November 2009 workshop on Human Trafficking.
